Learn about Dust Attack, Sweep, Tech (Ukemi), Instant Block, Dizzies, Throws, Taunt & Respect in Guilty Gear Strive.
Dust Attack
The Dust Attack is the basic air combo starter in Guilty Gear Strive. By pressing S+HS, your character will perform their Dust Attack. Every character's Dust Attack is an overhead (o), meaning it must be blocked standing by holding back. Connecting a Dust Attack on your opponent will send them reeling into the air. If you then hold any upwards direction, you will perform the Chase Jump and follow them up to start an air combo. After reaching a certain height in the Chase Jump, the background will change to a burning orange/red fire display. Dust Attacks will only launch your opponent if their feet are on the ground; hitting an airborne or downed opponent will not result in a Dust Attack air combo opportunity.
Sweep
The Sweep is a basic knockdown tactic available to every character in Guilty Gear Strive. By pressing d+S+HS, your character will perform their Sweep. Sweep attacks must be guarded against low. Each sweep attack possesses different properties and follow-up opportunities.
Tech (Ukemi)
Tech, also known as Ukemi (a term found within the training mode options), is an option to lessen the effects of certain throws, knockbacks, and combos in Guilty Gear Strive. To perform a tech, press any two buttons while in the air. Depending on the attack your character is hit by, teching may or may not be possible. Each attack inflicts a certain amount of float stun, which allows other moves to follow up without characters being able to tech out. The stronger the attack, the more float stun it inflicts. After a tech, the double/triple jump and air dash options are reset, allowing you to perform them again. You can also choose to direct your tech either left or right for repositioning. As an added bonus, characters become invincible for a few frames as the tech starts, allowing you to time your techs to avoid incoming attacks and potentially leave your opponent vulnerable.
Instant Block
Instant Block is a defensive technique in Guilty Gear Strive. By timing your block so that you press back right before or as an incoming attack connects, you will Instant Block, indicated by a white flash on your character. This allows your character to recover faster out of block stun than with a standard guard, which is useful for retaliation and escaping pressure. Every successful Instant Block will also increase your Tension Gauge slightly.
Dizzies
If you are struck repeatedly over a short amount of time in Guilty Gear Strive, your character will become dizzy, indicated by birds flying around their head. During this time, you are unable to perform any actions. You can speed up recovery by shaking the joystick in all directions and rapidly pressing the buttons. If a character is dizzied mid-combo, they will remain dizzy until recovery. Each move has a "dizzy potential" called Bear Stun Rating, which indicates dizzy resistance. Characters and their Bear Stun Ratings are: Anji (60), Axl (60), Baiken (60), Chipp (60), Dizzy (60), Faust (60), Jam (60), Johnny (78), Ky (60), May (72), Millia (60), Potemkin (80), Sol (60), Testament (60), Venom (60), Zato (60).
Throws
Throws are moves in Guilty Gear Strive that deal considerable damage quickly and are often easier to execute than combos. To perform a throw, press either f+HS or b+HS while next to your opponent. Command throws are similar but require specific joystick and button combinations, generally inflicting more damage and having better follow-up possibilities.
Taunt & Respect
All characters in Guilty Gear Strive have a Taunt and a Respect. To perform a Taunt, press R (C on stick). Taunts can be canceled into any attack after about half the animation plays. Respects are performed by pressing f+R (f+C on stick) and can be canceled at any time, making them a good choice for luring an opponent into attacking. Performing a Taunt will raise your opponent's Tension Gauge slightly.
- Use the Dust Attack to start air combos when your opponent is grounded.
- Utilize Sweep attacks as a low-hitting alternative to Dust Attacks.
- Master Teching (Ukemi) to escape combos, reposition, and even punish opponents by timing your invincibility frames.
- Instant Block to recover faster from block stun and gain Tension Gauge faster.
- Shake the joystick and press buttons rapidly to speed up dizzy recovery.
- Use Respects as a lure attempt due to their instant cancelability.
