The game was released in September 2013, with an arcade version, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Arcade, released in Japan on December 24, 2013. It was succeeded by Dead or Alive 5 Last Round in February 2015.

Pre-Release:

A new Dead or Alive 5 project was teased on April 28, 2013, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The trailer revealed the addition of Momiji and a Ninja Gaiden themed stage, Sky City Tokyo. On May 7, the game was officially named Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, set for a September 2013 release, incorporating features from Dead or Alive 5+ like tutorial mode, custom soundtracks, and new costumes. Subsequent trailers confirmed the return of Leon, the addition of Virtua Fighter's Jacky Bryant, and stages like Lost World and Forest. It was clarified on June 3rd that Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate would not be compatible online with the original Dead or Alive 5 or Plus due to new moves like the Power Launcher and netcode changes. A trailer on June 11th confirmed Leon, the Desert Wasteland stage, Rachel from Ninja Gaiden, and the Aircraft Carrier stage, completing the roster announcement. On June 23rd, it was confirmed that the Custom Soundtrack feature would also include BGM from Dead or Alive 2.
