Learn about Lumber, Ore, Production Hammers, Rum, Silver, Sugar, Tobacco, Tools, and Trade Goods in Civilization Beyond Earth.

Lumber is a cheap resource to sell but essential for producing Production Hammers. Carpenters require Lumber to create Hammers, which are used in nearly all production. Colonies may struggle to find excess Lumber due to its rarity.

Ore has a high trading price and can be manufactured into Tools and Guns. If a colony lacks the power to manufacture Ore, it can be shipped back. Otherwise, use Ore to make Tools for production hammers and guns.

Production Hammers are produced from Lumber at a one-to-one ratio. Carpenter's Shops produce 3 Hammers per Citizen, and Lumber Mills produce 6 Hammers per Citizen. Hammers are necessary for producing buildings, units, and Founding Father points. Colonies need a good Lumber source to produce new buildings and become self-sufficient.

Rum is a stable manufactured good. Rum Distiller's Houses produce 3 Rum per Citizen, while Rum Distilleries and Rum Factories produce 6 Rum per Citizen. Rum Factories provide a +50% Rum Production bonus. Rum is a good seller due to the difficulty in finding Sugar.

Silver is the most valuable product, mined in Mountains at extremely low levels, yielding about 2 per turn, or more if lucky. Silver sells for about 19 per unit but has a high dropping rate when sold in vast quantities, potentially leveling out at 7-9.

Sugar is found in tropical areas and is valuable for producing Rum. Sugar generally sells for more than other crops like Tobacco and Cotton because it takes longer to generate. If you have excess Sugar, sell it or use it to make Rum.

Tobacco, despite being a cash crop, does not sell highly. It should almost always be used to make Cigars, which are a stable manufactured product. Ensure extra cities process all Tobacco.

Tools are vital after food, needed for clearing forests, crafting roads, and producing impressive buildings. They are also useful for producing guns. Tools have the same selling price as Guns, which is often the same as Ore. It is generally better to keep Tools rather than send them back.

Blacksmith's Houses produce 3 Tools per Citizen, while Blacksmith's Shops and Ironworks produce 6 Tools per Citizen. Ironworks provide a +50% Tools Production bonus.

Trade Goods are bought from Europe and used to trade with natives. While cheap to purchase and convert into more valuable items, relying on Trade Goods long-term is unnecessary, as Guns or Horses can also be traded.

Tips
  • Prioritize securing a Lumber source for consistent Production Hammer output.
  • Consider manufacturing Ore into Tools and Guns if your colony has sufficient production capacity.
  • Rum and Cigars are stable manufactured goods; focus on securing Sugar and Tobacco sources.
  • Be cautious when selling large quantities of Silver, as its value can drop significantly.
  • Trade Goods are a good starting point for native trade but can be replaced by other valuable commodities later.
