Announcement and Initial Development: System Shock (Remake) was first announced in November 2015 by Nightdive Studios. An initial demo using the Unity engine was part of a Kickstarter campaign launched on June 28th, 2016, which successfully met its goal.

Development Delays and Engine Changes: The game experienced multiple release date pushes, initially targeting Holiday 2017, then 2018, 2020, and Summer 2021. Development was temporarily halted in February 2018 but resumed in April 2018. The game was later rebuilt using Unreal Engine 4, with an attempted port to Unreal Engine 5 being cancelled due to issues.

Demo Releases and Beta: A second playable demo built on Unreal Engine 4 was released on May 27th, 2020, on GOG and Steam, receiving updates and later being available on the Epic Games Store. The most recent demo update was on February 7th, 2023. The Kickstarter Backer Beta was released on March 3rd, 2023.

Release and Post-Launch Updates: The game went gold on May 9th, 2023, and released on PC on May 30th, 2023. Console versions for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S followed on May 21st, 2024, with Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 releases on December 18th, 2025. Features like the Female Gender/Sex Option were added in Patch 1.2 alongside the console release. Features like GamePig minigames were teased but not included in the final release.

Concerns and Comparisons: Prior to release, some expressed concerns that the remake felt too similar to System Shock 2 or borrowed too heavily from later games.
