There are 8 Timeless Skills available in Sonic Generations.
- Last Chance (50 Equip Points): Get an extra life when you're out of lives. Buy from the Skill Shop.
- 10 Second Rings (30 Equip Points): Dropped Rings take 10 seconds to disappear. Buy from the Skill Shop.
- Athleticism (20 Equip Points): Lose less speed running uphill and in water. Buy from the Skill Shop.
- Time Break (80 Equip Points): Slows down time temporarily. Buy from the Skill Shop.
- Super Sonic (100 Equip Points): Collect 50 Rings to become Super Sonic. Defeat Time Eater. Super Sonic is Sonic using Power Sneakers and Invincibility at the same time.
There are 14 Classic Skills exclusive to Classic Sonic.
- Flame Shield (70 Equip Points): Shield enables midair dashes. Buy from the Skill Shop. Allows Classic Sonic an Air Boost, lets him walk through flames and stand on lava, perfect for Crisis City. Disappears when touching water.
- Aqua Shield (70 Equip Points): Enables a Bound Jump and eliminates the need to get air. Buy from the Skill Shop after clearing Chemical Plant Act 1 Challenge 3. Useful for underwater areas and reaching higher paths.
- Thunder Shield (70 Equip Points): Enables double-jumping. Buy from the Skill Shop. Also attracts nearby Rings and protects from electricity. Does not disappear when touching water.
- Twin Spin Attack (30 Equip Points): Allows you to attack in a mid-jump. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Sky Sanctuary Act 1. Press the Jump Button after jumping or in midair to create a shockwave that defeats enemies.
- Invincible Start (40 Equip Points): Start the stage with temporary Invincibility. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Seaside Hill Act 1.
- Shield (60 Equip Points): A shield protects you from a single hit. Buy from the Skill Shop. Gives Sonic 2 Shield Power-ups.
- Power Sneakers (60 Equip Points): Run faster. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Speed Highway Act 1. Gives Sonic 2 Power Sneakers Power-ups.
- Long Spin Dash (30 Equip Points): Your Spin Dash will carry you further. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Rooftop Run Act 1.
- Treasure Scanner (40 Equip Points): Allows you to see hidden items and Springs. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Green Hill Act 1. Makes a noise that beeps faster as Sonic gets closer to an item.
- Homing Attack (100 Equip Points): Enables the use of Homing Attacks. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Planet Wisp Act 1. Works the same as with Modern Sonic.
- Hercules Muscles (10 Equip Points): Push movable objects faster. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Crisis City Act 1.
- Breath Holder (20 Equip Points): Stay underwater longer. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Chemical Plant Act 1. Allows Classic Sonic to stay underwater without air for 45 seconds until the countdown appears.
- Boardmaster (70 Equip Points): Hop on a skateboard whenever you want. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in City Escape Act 1.
- Ring Time (60 Equip Points): Turn enemies into Rings for a short time. Buy from the Skill Shop. Can be used at least 5 times per level. Using it in the cellar area of Rooftop Run Act 1 before the Egg Fighter pushes the barrel will cause a level restart.
You have to press the Y Button to use Flame Shield, Aqua Shield, Thunder Shield, Boardmaster, and Ring Time. Shields, the Skateboard, and Ring Time regenerate after losing a life. If you have a shield up and use a Pink Spike Wisp, the shield resets.
There are Modern Skills exclusive to Modern Sonic.
- Blast Off (10 Equip Points): Press the X Button when **GO!** appears to get a free boost. Buy from the Skill Shop.
- Speed Up (20 Equip Points): Increases Sonic's speed. Buy from the Skill Shop.

- Quick Slide (30 Equip Points): Enables Quick Step when on a skateboard. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in City Escape Act 2.
- Acceleration (10 Equip Points): Increases speed when starting to run. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Green Hill Act 2.
- Smasher Bonus (30 Equip Points): Breaking enemies, etc. fills Boost Gauge. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Chemical Plant Act 2.
- Ring Energy Bonus (40 Equip Points): Collecting Rings fills the gauge faster. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Planet Wisp Act 2.
- Boost Gauge Up (60 Equip Points): Extend the length of your Boost Gauge. Buy from the Skill Shop. A good skill if you enjoy boosting.
- Serial Homing (40 Equip Points): Perform sequential Homing Attacks faster. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Crisis City Act 2.
- Auto-Gauge (30 Equip Points): Boost Gauge fills automatically over time. Collect all 5 Red Star Rings in Speed Highway Act 2.
