The first phase of the Chthon encounter, "The Elder God's Awakening," tests your team's ability to manage incoming threats and maintain defensive integrity. Chthon will primarily utilize sweeping energy blasts that cover large portions of the arena. These attacks are telegraphed by glowing runes appearing on the ground, giving you a brief window to reposition. Prioritize dodging these blasts, as they deal significant damage and can inflict the 'Corrupted' debuff, which reduces healing received.

During this phase, Chthon will also summon smaller "Void Echoes." These ethereal entities are not particularly strong individually, but they will relentlessly pursue your Hunters and attempt to drain their Heroism. It's crucial to ass a Hunter or two to focus on clearing these echoes quickly, ideally with area-of-effect abilities like the Shadowmancer's 'Umbral Nova' or the Sentinel's 'Guardian's Shield' to mitigate their impact. Failure to manage the echoes can lead to a rapid depletion of Heroism, making it difficult to activate powerful abilities when needed.

Chthon's core mechanic in this phase is the "Whispers of Oblivion" ability. This channeled attack targets a random Hunter and will deal massive damage if not interrupted. The visual cue for this is Chthon raising its appendages and a dark vortex forming around the targeted Hunter. Any Hunter with a strong interrupt ability, such as the Vanguard's 'Shield Bash' or the Psion's 'Mind Spike,' should be ready to deploy it immediately. If multiple Hunters are available, coordinate interrupts to ensure the channel is broken.
