Learn how to play guitar in Rock Band 3, including basic controls, advanced techniques like Hammer-ons and Pull-offs, and Overdrive activation.
Walkthrough
- 1Basic Controls: Match colored fret buttons to the corresponding colored notes on the screen. Hold down the fret button and strum the strum bar (the horizontal bar) when the note reaches the target strip at the bottom of the fret board. For chords (multiple notes at once), hold down all corresponding fret buttons and strum.
- 2Advanced Techniques:
- Alternative Strumming: Strum up and down at the required speed, useful for fast or long, repetitive sections.
- 3Hammer-ons and Pull-offs: Strum the first normal-sized note, then for subsequent squat notes, simply press the corresponding fret buttons without strumming. Hammer-ons move toward the guitar body, and pull-offs move toward the headstock.
- 4Overdrive: Hit glowing white notes perfectly to fill the Overdrive bar (seen below your targets). When the bar is half full and flashing, tilt your guitar upwards to activate Overdrive. This doubles your score, makes the crowd easier to please and harder to upset, and adds a special effect to notes if using the Stratocaster. You can continue hitting Overdrive notes to build more Overdrive.
- 5Solo Sections: Indicated by a blue background. These sections use your Stratocaster's effects and award bonus points based on performance.
Solo Score Tiers:
- Below 60%: Messy Solo (no extra points)
- 60%-69%: Okay Solo (few extra points)
- 70%-79%: Good Solo (more points)
- 80%-89%: Great Solo (good deal of points)
- 90%-99%: Awesome Solo (even more points)
- 100%: Perfect Solo (maximum solo points)
Tips
- Practice alternative strumming for sections with rapid notes.
- Master Hammer-ons and Pull-offs to efficiently clear sequences of shorter notes.
- Activating Overdrive strategically can significantly boost your score.
- Aim for 100% accuracy during solo sections to maximize bonus points.
Availability: Solo sections appear within the Guitar Career setlist, starting with Tier 1 songs in Los Angeles at El Ocho.
