This section covers managing your save file in Pokémon Sun and Moon. Like previous titles, these games only allow one save file per cartridge or digital download. The save file is updated when you manually choose to save in the field, except during the end credits and a few other specific instances. It is highly recommended to save often, typically after reaching each new town, to prevent data loss, especially if your 3DS/2DS battery is low.

This guide is particularly useful for those purchasing used copies of the game. While older Pokémon games allowed easy new game starts by simply saving over a new file, Pokémon Sun and Moon, like some other recent titles, have implemented file protection. This prevents accidental or intentional deletion of save files by younger players or others.

To delete the current save file and start a new game, hold Up, B, and X simultaneously as the game boots up from the Home Menu. On-screen instructions will guide you through the process.
