Navigate the horrors of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake with our comprehensive walkthrough. Discover spirit locations, item guides, and achievement tips.
Welcome to our Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake (2026) walkthrough and guide. In Fatal Frame II, your Camera is your weapon against angry spirits. Collect various types of film that you'll use as ammunition. Then, hold up your camera to see hidden spirits nearby and track them. Once you see a spirit, lock on and snap a focused shot to deal the most damage to it. Certain film types will do more damage than others. Continue upgrading your camera to increase your power as well.
With some spirits -- Specters and Twin Dolls -- you can use the camera to snap shots around the lost village as well. You will earn points for each of your pictures that you can use to unlock special photo mode items, outfits to customize the characters with, or even useful items for the story -- like healing and charms. Along with these photo opportunities, there are also physical collectibles to find in the world called Documents. All of these take the form of a note, book, or papers with lore that you can read.
Fatal Frame II uses a save feature that requires you to head to specific lanterns spread around the town in order to save your progress. You'll want to use your map to find them and save as much as possible to avoid losing any progress. For major story moments, it will auto-save.
If you're trying to collect all achievements as you play, it may require multiple playthroughs of the game. Some achievements require you to play on different difficulties or achieve various endings of the game. We'll include how to earn some achievements throughout our walkthrough, but you can take a look at our All Achievements page as well for the full list.

There are a few main mechanics you should know before hopping into the game: holding hands with Mayu will allow you to restore health without using a healing item -- press R2/RT to do so whenever she's close. If you're avoiding certain spirits, you can press O/B to crouch and hide in or under objects. The camera will be the most important item to use in the game -- press L2/LT to raise it and then R2/RT or R1/RB to snap a photo. While the camera is raised, use the D-Pad to switch between film types.
