Amnesia: The Bunker introduces several new mechanics compared to its predecessors, focusing on player agency and resource management. Key elements include a dynamic enemy AI, a crafting system, and the ability to defend yourself with a revolver. Maintaining the bunker's generator is crucial to keep the darkness at bay and deter the main enemy, known as the Beast. The pocket watch serves as a timer for fuel levels.

Players will need to utilize a variety of items found within the bunker to overcome obstacles. These include grenades for breaking down doors, flares to scare off rats or light up areas, and tools like the wrench and bolt cutters for interacting with the environment, such as removing gratings or disarming traps. Every item used represents an opportunity cost, as it could be saved for a more critical situation.

The Beast is a constant threat, adapting to the environment and reacting to sound. Players must remain vigilant, hide, or create distractions to avoid direct confrontation. While the Beast cannot be killed, it can be stunned with firearms or explosives, providing a brief window for escape. Be aware that actions like firing weapons, breaking doors, or triggering traps will attract its attention.

Mutated rats also pose a threat, requiring players to use items to scare them away or deal with them permanently by igniting infested corpses. Be mindful that rats can also attract the Beast with their screams.

The game features a semi-open world structure with randomized elements, enhancing replayability. A locker room is available in the main hub area for storage.
