StarCraft Zerg structures guide including Hatchery, Spawning Pool, and Evolution Chamber. Learn costs, prerequisites, and upgrades.

Hatchery

The Hatchery is the epicenter of the Zerg swarm, costing 300 Minerals. It produces Drones (50 Minerals each) and creep, essential for building other Zerg structures. It can be upgraded into a Lair and Hive. The Hatchery has 1250 Hit Points and can be upgraded with Burrow for 100 Minerals/100 Vespene Gas.

Extractor

Costing 50 Minerals, the Extractor requires a Hatchery and has 750 Hit Points. It is built over Vespene Gas geysers to make the resource accessible to Drones.

Spawning Pool

The Spawning Pool costs 200 Minerals, requires a Hatchery, and has 750 Hit Points. It allows the Hatchery to morph into a Lair and is responsible for Zergling upgrades, including Metabolic Boost (100 Minerals/100 Vespene Gas) and Adrenal Glands (200 Minerals/200 Vespene Gas).

Hydralisk Den

This structure costs 100 Minerals/50 Vespene Gas, requires a Spawning Pool, and has 850 Hit Points. It is responsible for Hydralisk upgrades, such as Muscular Augments (150 Minerals/150 Vespene Gas) and Grooved Spines (150 Minerals/150 Vespene Gas), and allows Hydralisk production.

Evolution Chamber

The Evolution Chamber costs 75 Minerals, requires a Hatchery, and has 750 Hit Points. It provides upgrades for all ground units. It is strongly suggested to build more than one to speed up the upgrading process. Upgrades include Melee Attacks (Levels 1-3 costing 100/150/200 Minerals and 100/150/200 Vespene Gas), Missile Attacks (Levels 1-3 costing 100/150/200 Minerals and 100/150/200 Vespene Gas), and Zerg Carapace (Levels 1-3 costing 150/225/300 Minerals and 150/225/300 Vespene Gas).

Creep Colony

Costing 75 Minerals, the Creep Colony requires a Hatchery and has 400 Hit Points. It produces and extends creep and can morph into static defense systems.

Sunken Colony

This static defense mechanism costs 50 Minerals, requires a pre-existing Creep Colony and a Spawning Pool, and has 300 Hit Points. It attacks ground units with a subterranean tentacle but cannot detect cloaked or burrowed units.

Spore Colony

The Spore Colony costs 50 Minerals, requires a pre-existing Creep Colony and an Evolution Chamber, and has 400 Hit Points. It provides air defense with an Air Attack of 15 and can detect invisible units, making it suitable for base outskirts.

Lair

The Lair is an upgraded form of the Hatchery, costing 150 Minerals/100 Vespene Gas and requiring a pre-existing Hatchery and Spawning Pool. It has 1800 Hit Points and offers three special upgrades for Overlords: Antennae (150 Minerals/150 Vespene Gas), Pneumatized Carapace (150 Minerals/150 Vespene Gas), and Ventral Sacs (200 Minerals/200 Vespene Gas).

Spire

Costing 200 Minerals/150 Vespene Gas, the Spire requires a Lair and has 600 Hit Points. It allows the creation of Mutalisks and Scourges and enables upgrades for flyer weapons and carapaces. Flyer Attack upgrades cost 100/150/200 Minerals and 100/150/200 Vespene Gas for levels 1-3. Flyer Carapace upgrades cost 150/225/300 Minerals and 150/225/300 Vespene Gas for levels 1-3.

Queen's Nest

The Queen's Nest costs 150 Minerals/100 Vespene Gas, requires a Lair, and has 850 Hit Points. It is described as one of the most important Zerg structures.

Tips
  • Build multiple Evolution Chambers to speed up ground unit upgrades.
  • Place Spore Colonies along the outskirts of your bases for early detection of air and invisible units.
  • Upgrading to a Lair is essential for mid to late-game Zerg strategies.
