Surviving Whiteouts

Learn how to prepare for and survive dangerous whiteouts in Frostpunk 2. This guide covers heat supply, fuel and food stockpiling, and material management to keep your city alive.

A whiteout is a dangerous weather anomaly in Frostpunk 2 that can end your game if you are unprepared. Whiteouts cause a significant temperature drop (at least 60°C), leading to population deaths, cutting off trade with other settlements, and potentially increasing tensions to a game-ending level. To survive, you must ensure adequate Heat, stockpile food, and have enough materials for repairs.

In the early game, follow story objectives to prepare for whiteouts. Later, use the Weather Timeline in the top right of your screen to anticipate incoming whiteouts and ensure your city is ready.

Heat Supply

Your top priority is ensuring sufficient Heat. Check the Heat supply bar in the top-center of the screen. Aim for at least a gray bar (meeting demand), but ideally a gold surplus. Red indicates unfulfilled demand.

Increase Heat by building Heating Hubs near Housing Districts. Research 'Housing Insulation' and 'Waste Heat Conversion' in the Idea Tree. You can also lower Heat demand by reducing the efficiency of districts, but be mindful of other resource outputs. As a last resort, activate the Generator's Overdrive for a temporary 35% Heat boost, but use it cautiously, especially after 60% capacity, and turn it off when it becomes unstable.

Stockpiling Fuel

Sufficient fuel is crucial to keep the generator running at full power during a whiteout. Maximize fuel extraction by building numerous extraction districts on coal and oil sources. Research upgrades like 'Coal Mines' and 'Pumpjacks'. The 'Carrion Coal Liquefactor' and 'Charcoal Regeneration Plant' also boost output. Expeditions can uncover additional fuel sources; establish Logistic Districts to divert these resources.

Once fuel supply meets demand, build Fuel Stockpile Hubs near Extraction Districts to store excess fuel.

Stockpiling Food

Similar to fuel, stockpile food to last through the whiteout. Establish Food Districts on Fertile Soil nodes and secure additional sources via expeditions. A few months before a whiteout, consider using Emergency Shifts in food production districts and encourage citizens to 'tighten their belts'. Build Food Stockpiling Hubs near Food Districts to store surplus food.

Stockpiling Materials

While less critical than heat or food, having a good stock of materials is important for urgent repairs, as production may slow or stop during a whiteout. Ensure you have sufficient extraction districts and consider stockpiling hubs for materials.
