Explore the development history of Overwatch 2, from its early access launch to its rebranding and the evolution of its PvE content. Learn about Blizzard's strategy and future plans.

Overwatch 2 entered early access in October 2022 as a free-to-play replacement for the original game, introducing 5v5 gameplay and a seasonal content model. Blizzard initially outlined a long-term PvE vision for the title, but in May 2023 announced that the planned PvE "Hero Mode" and its progression systems would not move forward. The only PvE missions released for the game were the Overwatch 2: Invasion story missions released alongside the full release of the game in August 2023, which Blizzard later confirmed would not receive additional missions.

In early February 2026, Overwatch 2 was rebranded back to Overwatch following a shift in Blizzard's strategy toward positioning the title as a "forever game," with leadership and developers unanimously agreeing that removing the numeral better reflected the franchise's long-term direction and unified vision.

Later on 24 February 2026, Overwatch Rush was introduced as a top-down hero shooter for mobile devices and in full development by a team separate from Team 4 (to keep them focused on the PC game).
